Thomas Fitzhugh rebuilt Nant Mill as a corn mill in 1832 and probably built Nant Bridge at the same time.
Farmers brought their wheat, oats etc. to be ground into flour or animal feed. It was also a farm, with pigs, more than 30 cows, and horses for farm work and the milk round. It had about 100 acres of land! (40 hectares) This is a memory from over a century ago: “After the harvest, Dad used to load several bags of grain in the trap and take us to Nant Mill to have it milled. My sisters would ride in front, and I’d wriggle myself down between the sacks of wheat. It was a real thrill to arrive and see Aunt Sally and play with our cousins. She fed us lovely homemade bread and butter; it was so good, it tasted like cake to us. We went upstairs in the Mill and sat on the wide window sill to watch the big wheel turn by the force of the water.”
