Bunkers Hill cottages were probably the oldest workers cottages in Wales
Bunkers Hill was a row of ten brilliantly- whitewashed cottages situated in an elevated position overlooking Y Ddol (The Meadows). Bunkers Hill cottages were a link with the greatest era of Bersham Ironworks. The cottages were probably the oldest workers cottages in Wales and they were named after the first, and one of the most important battles of the American War of Independence. No doubt Wilkinson’s cannons found their way there. It was said that he wasn’t fussy to whom he sold his weapons. The cottages were of course simply built with none of the amenities that we would associate with modern life. Perhaps this is why in 1968 Wrexham Rural District Council placed a clearance order on the cottages stating that they were unfit for human habitation. This led to a Public Inquiry. To cut a long story short The Secretary of State for Wales agreed with the local council and decided that the cottages be vacated and demolished. The death sentence was a long drawn out affair with many twists and turns, but sad to say that the cottages were finally demolished in the 1990s.
