Offa's Dyke was built around 785AD under the orders of Offa, the King of Mercia.
Offa’s Dyke is a huge ditch and rampart up to 8 metres high, roughly following the border of England and Wales. Although it is carefully constructed with the ditch on the Welsh side and clear views from the embankment on the English side, it is not known if it was a defensive structure or merely a boundary marker. This section of the Dyke is especially impressive although until recently when some of the trees around it were felled, it was quite easy to walk past and not notice it. Look out for the sculpture of Offa, carved by Simon O’Rourke in 2012.
