Badgers and great crested newts are two of the special residents of Llwyni.
Llwyni Pond is home to all three species of newt; great crested, smooth and palmate as well as frogs and toads. Look out for reed warbler and reed bunting around the pond as well as dragon and damselflies. Springs in the Gathering Grounds served the people of Connah’s Quay with water until the 1940s. The wells were capped in the 1980s when much needed woodland management was carried out including clearing overgrown conifers and replanting with broadleaves such as cherry. The tall western hemlocks were planted for timber after the Second World War but were never harvested.
